Carpenter Nature Center Animal Ambassador Visit

In May 2026 we rounded up at the register for Carpenter Nature Center and together we raised $1,397.83!

We were honored to meet one of their newer animal ambassadors, an Eastern Screech Owl. despite only weighing 165 grams and being a little over a year old this little owl is fully grown. It was found with an injured eye and because of that cannot be returned to the wild. Despite it's name the Eastern Screech Owl does not actually screech but makes more or a whinny type noise much like a horse. They come in 2 color variants, grey like the one that visited us and more of a brown, both are common in Minnesota. These little owls live 10 to 15 years in the wild and a little longer in captivity, owls tend to do very well in captivity. Most people think of owls only being active at night when in reality they are asleep and awake at varying times of the day and are most active at dawn and dusk. Last owl fact we learned from CNC in that owls do not in fact turn their heads 360 degrees like in cartoons but more like 270 degrees (which is still pretty impressive!). To learn more about the important work CNC is doing and their upcoming events visit their website at https://carpenternaturecenter.org/
