Why I joined the Board

"To be honest, I don't know if I would have considered running for the board if a board member hadn't talked to me more about it. I had never served on any type of Board before so I guess I assumed I needed to know all the things to do it. But the reality is, you really just need to love the Co-Op and have an open mind for learning.

A little background on me, I grew up in Co-Ops. My mom was a member of Mississippi Market when it was a little hole in the wall in Highland Park in St Paul. I spent time there with her and I still love the smell of a Co-Op and have fond memories of being able to use the prized pricing gun to help label cans.

What I didn't realize as a kid was what a valuable experience my mom instilled in me. Co-Ops are a labor of love. They are an expression of community coming together to provide for each other and take care of each other. As I went off on my own, I always found myself drawn to the nearest Co-Op in whatever neighborhood I lived in. And every time, walking in was like being home. I find my people, my community, and good food there.

So, when the opportunity presented itself to run for the Board at Spiral, I decided to dip my toe in and see what it was all about.

Now, in my second term and 6th year on the board, I have been part of so many amazing things. From the harder financial times to now a beautiful expanded new space! I always remember what a member said at one of our annual meetings when things were a little tough. She said we are "the little engine that could" - and it is so true! Whenever we have needed anything, our members come through and do whatever they can to be sure we have a healthy and lively Co-Op community for years to come.

I have learned so much about how it all works! I have worked with wonderful people supporting the Co-Op and our vision, have learned about myself, leadership, cooperation, and so much more. I am grateful to have made my little mark on our 45 year Co-Op history!

If you are doubting your abilities or value as a board member, please feel free to reach out to any of us. I can assure you that you do have something to offer and we would love to support you and serve the Co-Op with you!"
